First, The university was founded as South Carolina College on December 19, 1801. It was founded by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly started by Governor John Drayton in an effort to promote harmony between the Lowcountry and the Backcountry. On January 10, 1805 the college commenced classes with a traditional classical curriculum. When South Carolina College opened its doors in 1805 the building that is now known as Rutledge College was the only building on campus.
Next, The University of South Carolina is South Carolina's flagship university and is operating normally. It offers more than 350 majors, including over 60 nationally ranked programs. The university is also a major center for global research. USC's curriculum has evolved to meet the needs of each class and the campus community. USC offers a University 101 course that's a national model.
In 2025, the University of South Carolina is ranked 121st in the nation for national universities by US News Best Colleges. USC is also one of the top public universities in Columbia, South Carolina. USC is ranked #121 in National Universities. They are also ranked #61 in top public schools.
